Pastor Carlos Message:

As we reflect on what happened over 2,000 years ago to our Lord Jesus
Christ, we remember that on a night like this, He was sold for thirty pieces of
silver by someone who had walked closely with Him--someone who had
dipped his hand into the basket to take bread at the very same moment.
Jesus, knowing He would be betrayed by someone He had entrusted and
loved, still chose to love him until the end. In our own lives, we, too,
experience betrayal and heartbreak--often from those we hold dearest--but
tonight is a moment to reflect on how Jesus carried Himself with grace, dignity, and unshakable purpose.
The Bible tells us that Judas, filled with remorse, returned the silver, and when it was rejected, he cast it aside and ended his life. Soon after, the people chose Barabbas over Jesus, and on that fateful Friday, our Savior was hung on a cross for all our transgressions. He was beaten, His beard ripped out, and as He was whipped, His flesh was torn. As He hung on the cross, He didn't look like the miracle-working Messiah--He was the disfigured, suffering body of Christ. And just like Him, there are seasons in our lives when we, too, feel disfigured by pain, sickness, or sorrow, when we no longer recognize ourselves. But just a few days later, Jesus rose again--restored, glorified, and transformed. Mount Pleasant, I want to remind you that as this church has also journeyed through seasons of hardship and insecurity--where what once was may have seemed to vanish--the Holy Spirit is whispering that the time of resurrection is near. This place will become a sanctuary of worship and a dwelling of Holy Spirit power like never before. This mountain will burn with
holy fire, as many have prayed for--some who are now watching from above, and many who still stand ready to fight the good fight here on earth. As we finish this Holy Week, let us reflect on His greatness, His goodness, and give Him all the glory--for it is always His. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. With love and many blessings.

Welcome Pastor

Carlos Ruano

image.png
image.png

Carlos Ruano was born on May 15 in Washington, DC, to first generation immigrants from Guatemala.  He was born again in June 1997 through the charismatic movement and had devoted his life to serving the Lord ever since.   He will have been married to his wife, Alba for 26 years, and together they have three children: Carlos, Yvanna and Adriana Ruano.

After nearly a year-long search, Mt. Pleasant Church is pleased to welcome Pastor Carlos into the church family. Although he officially begins the pastor duties this month, he has been an important part of the church’s new journey throughout 2024.

Introduced to the congregation through the Syd Fearing family early last year as a guest speaker, Carlos initially stepped in as one of the rotating speakers for a Sunday service. Weekly guest speakers were scheduled through 2024 while the pastor search committee pursued serious candidates for the full-time open position. Carlos’ ease and display of love and his devotion to God was immediate on his first message to Mt. Pleasant, March 17, 2024. He connected with many congregation members immediately.

So many of the congregation were inspired by his sharing of the word he was invited back to share more. He has admitted that at the beginning of his time at Mt. Pleasant, he had no real thought to pursue the pastor opening. He was already working full-time at the church he founded in Washington, D.C., Mercy House Home – Mercy House. He also was an employee of the local Furnace Mountain Camp (formerly Freedom Center, formerly Glaydin) in Luckett’s, Virginia. However, the calling of God began to lead in a direction that led to him presenting his resume for consideration.

Pastor Carlos brings to Mt. Pleasant Church over twenty years of missionary experience in areas that include Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua. Together with his wife, Alba, they founded Mercy House in 2016 where weekly services are at 3:00 p.m. and include activities and fellowship opportunities throughout the year. He is also a spiritual director at Furnace Mountain Camp where a large focus is on youth outreach, among other responsibilities. He lives with his wife and three children in Gaithersburg, Maryland.       --submitted by Shelly Coates

Member Spotlight - Celebrating Elizabeth Cole Williams – Submitted by Shelly Coates

Our sister in Christ, Elizabeth Williams, has always treasured her family and friends at Mt Pleasant. She has enjoyed a lifetime of memories made within the walls of Mt Pleasant beginning when she met her husband, Selby, at the Mt. Olivet picnic woods. After a courtship they married in a small ceremony on August 6, 1949, in a church in Maryland with immediate family in attendance. She began attending Mt. Pleasant as a newlywed with her mother-in-law Mrs. Ollie Williams. She recalls her first visit was in the old church building formerly located in the center of Mt. Pleasant cemetery, south of the church’s current location. She recalls the building at that time was “basic,” with only wood heat and a small sanctuary. No inside plumbing existed, and members used homemade drapes to divide the space when needed for classrooms, meetings or special functions.Elizabeth remembers as she began attending church there was a division within the congregation. There were two groups: one in favor of building a new place of worship and the other group against. She was approached by representatives from each group trying to recruit her support. Both she and Selby both voted in favor of the new construction. Members doing so were also required to pledge a monthly financial sum (amount and duration unknown) which would be committed toward the building construction. During this time, and for many years following, the church was affiliated with the Hillsborough charge circuit, which at that time, consisted of as many as five churches and usually one pastor serving all. As her family grew, many Sundays Elizabeth and her two daughters, Peggy and Debbie, traveled to and from church without Selby. And there was good reason: spring & summer, in particular, the Taylorstown social life revolved around men’s baseball on Sunday afternoons. The field had to be ready by first pitch. In Elizabeth’s weekend life the Sunday schedule was church, baseball at Miss Anna Hendrick’s field and lunch adjacent in Mabel Baker’s yard. Families would attend the games every week which included self-made picnic meals to enjoy. Eventually Selby began attending church services every week. “He was usually dressed and ready to go before I was” Elizabeth recalls “but first he had to get the ball field ready before we would leave.” Selby made the commitment to attend church as a family but only if they all sat in the front. Elizabeth and Selby were fond of the children’s involvement during the service and they wanted to see and hear it all. Coincidentally, there is a stained glass window located at that same pew where the family sat each week. The window was donated by Elizabeth celebrating the Williams family legacy at Mt. Pleasant. It was important to her to pick out and put into place this dedication when the opportunity became available. And speaking of special memories made in connection with the Williams family name, both her daughters held their weddings at Mt Pleasant; all four of her grandchildren were christened within its walls and, too, the celebration of her beloved Selby’s life. Throughout the history of pastors at Mt. Pleasant, Reverend Tom Jennings was a source of strength for Elizabeth. He prayed with her when her mother, Marcia Knuckles, became ill. He was available on many occasions to take her to see her mother and eventually attended her funeral. There are other pastors whom she appreciated, but Tom Jennings support during that time of her life is a sentimental memory. Her prayer for Mt. Pleasant ‘is to always remain close, pull through tough times, remain a living body and grow in spirit. It’s evident it will happen because it is happening. Mt. Pleasant will always be my little church.’Her faith in God and her Lord and Savior is where she has always drawn strength and guidance from and also to support others in her family and church community. Elizabeth is the true example of a prayer warrior.

Brenda Collins shared this letter for the Congregants to enjoy!

From Debbie Macomber’s God Guest List

A woman arrived at the gates of heaven to be met by St. Peter.

“You may first want to join the other at the throne,” he said to her, “and then greet those you loved on earth. But when you are ready, I’ll take you on a tour of heaven.”When the time came for her tour, she could hardly take it all in. It reminded her a little of her earthly home, but she could see that earth had only been a pale shadow of what she was seeing now. They explored every nook and cranny of heaven – waterfalls, fields of flowers, exquisite buildings, and streets of gold.As the tour drew to an end, she noticed one massive door they had not yet explored. A gold padlock secured it. “What’s in that room?” she asked“You don’t want to see that room,” St. Peter said, steering her away from it. “It’s only a storeroom.” “But I do. May I see inside? I want to see every bit of heaven.”St. Peter didn’t answer. Instead he took a large key out of his pocket, put it in the lock and turned it. The tumblers clicked and the padlock opened. He took the lock off and opened the door. The woman had to blink several times to take it all in. Inside the cavernous room were stacks and stacks of gifts, wrapped in all the colors of the rainbow and tied with all the colors of heaven. She clapped her hands with delight. “Is this where you store presents for everyone in heaven?”“No. These gifts are not for heaven, they were meant for earth.”“What do you mean ‘were’?” She walked through the stacks and came to a pile marked with her name. “Look, these gifts are for me.” She fingered the paper and ribbons. “May I open them?”“No. You don’t need them now.” St. Peter put a hand on her shoulder guiding her to the door.“But if I don’t need the now, does that mean I needed them on earth?” She couldn’t take her eyes off the pile. To think she would never get those beautifully wrapped gifts. He nodded his head. “Yes, you needed them on earth.”She looked around the room, realizing that there must have been millions of gifts. Maybe more, since she couldn’t see an end to the room. “Why weren’t my gifts sent to me on earth?” As she looked closer, she could read names on all the gifts. “Not just my gifts; why haven’t any of these gifts been sent?”St. Peter sighed. “You don’t understand. Every one of them was sent.” Moving his arm in an arc that encompassed the whole room, he said, “All of these and more. These are the ones that were returned unopened.” He moved her toward the door. “Many people on earth don’t recognize God’s gifts and fail to open them.’

A man was working outside and got bit by some ants. He screamed, “Ow! Why did God even create ants?!” His little boy was out in the yard with him too and said, “Dad, that’s a really mean thing to say. Of course God had to create ants!” When the dad asked why, the boy calmly replied, “Because without ants, the uncles would have no wives.”

The Talbott family: (l to r) Chip, Barbara, (Santa Charlie) Andrea and Mark.

Celebrating Barbara Talbott

Corinthians 1:9 “God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.”

Barbara’s contributions to Mt. Pleasant are numerous. Ever wonder who is behind the scenes when it comes to preparing supplies for monthly communion? Or, who does that wonderful job of setting out the holiday decorations? Read on to find out and much more about our sister in Christ.

She began attending Mt. Pleasant in 1976 and soon after transferred her membership from Mt. Oak Church in Bowie, Maryland. While attending Mt. Oak, Barbara was a member of the choir and remembers being a part of caroling on Christmas Eve. She recalls fond memories of those blessings and enjoying fellowship after caroling with hot chocolate and Christmas goodies.

When the Talbott family began attending Mt. Pleasant, the oldest, Mark, was just two years old. Along with his younger sister, Andrea, the family attended Mt. Pleasant until they left for college. They were active in church holiday programs, youth group and confirmation class. They have since moved away and now have families of their own. Happy grandparents Barbara, and her husband Chip, look forward to spending time together whenever they have the opportunity.

Barbara has shared her talent and love for gardening and landscaping almost as long as she has attended the church. She ensures holiday decor is put into place as well as cleaned up and stored away. Each Christmas she makes sure the church Christmas tree is put into place. Look carefully at the ornaments on the tree. Each one represents the meaning of the birth of Christ. Even the candles used for the light of Christ each worship service. She has had the privilege of working with many pastors over the years for worship service needs, but Barbara remembers working with Pastor Stephen King during those COVID days under very different conditions. More detail was required in order to prepare the building for worship. Everything had to be wiped down, including Bibles and hymnals, to ensure safety for those returning to worship in person.

Her dedication to fulfill the needs for weekly services, celebrations and special events along with the set up for monthly communion, she makes the detail seem effortless.

Over the years Barbara has taught several fitness classes including several years in the church basement. Several members were regulars for years.

Her prayer for her brothers and sisters at Mt. Pleasant is to keep steadfast as one body and grow in strength together moving forward. A special prayer to all to continue to use your talents and gifts to bless the Holy Spirit at Mt. Pleasant Church.

🎵 Thank you Barbara-you are a valued and loved disciple of Christ.🎵

Psalms 23 -A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anoints my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Barbara is a weekly contributor at adult Sunday school and keeps Psalms 23, 139 and Joshua 1:9 as her favored scriptures.

Alisa Morgan Hart

Joined Mt. Pleasant in 2018

Favorite Bible Verse: Roman 1:11-12 (NIV)

Like so many before her, Alisa Hart recalls one of her first memories of Mt. Pleasant from attending a ham and turkey dinner with her family. The Harts (parents Vanessa and Dan) had recently relocated to Taylorstown from Sterling, Virginia around July 4th when she was ten years old. The family regularly attended a Lutheran church prior to the move and had not had a chance to try out many churches in western Loudoun yet; Mt. Pleasant felt good and just fit (like those dinners). The sense of community, inclusion and love has been a constant for Alisa for over ten years. She’s always known her Lord and Savior from childhood. Alisa recalls her mother ran a youth group at the Lutheran church and she and her sisters Madison and Sarah, would attend meetings and events regularly. When she began attending Mt. Pleasant, she recalls she and her sisters of being the only ‘youth’ who attended regularly for years. It was different, but she did not feel a void. She remembers being thirteen and the only student in her confirmation class under the leadership of Pastor Tony. Once her classes were complete, she joined the church and has been a member ever since. She shared that there was a period around COVID where she felt a need for more academic content and attended services at Hamilton Baptist for a time. Coincidentally, she recalled that she saw she was short on gas many Sunday mornings, and due to the shorter distance, she would attend services again at Mt. Pleasant. As she attended regular worship at Mt. Pleasant, her gasoline crisis seemed to resolve itself. As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things (Ecclesiastes 11:5) a.k.a: God works in mysterious ways. Alisa shows real passion for things she cares for deeply. Two standouts include animals and sustainable agriculture. As a junior, she is transferring to Bridgewater College beginning August 2024 and pursuing a degree in Environmental Science. Currently her hobbies include participating in 4-H, country line dancing and swing. She now teaches dancing and has moved into choreographing dance routines. This has led to a recent trip to Florida to participate in a dance competition. She fondly recounts how some of her hobbies have turned into employment -- she can enjoy her hobbies while being able to have a job. How does that saying go? “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”Internship – currently working for Loudoun Water Conservation which ends on August 31, 2024. The job never seemed like work as the mission is improving the landscape throughout the county. In Bridgewater, she will serve as an intern with a local food pantry that teaches how to create and sustain food using local resources.Alisa had two messages she felt led to share around the time of the disaffiliation of Mt. Pleasant from the United Methodist. And what timing! To the delight of the congregation Alisa shared those messages as she packed the house to share God’s word on February 25, 2024, Are You Listening? and May 12, 2024, Creepy Christians. These sermons (and others) can be viewed on Mt. Pleasant’s YouTube channel Mt. Pleasant Church Taylorstown. She would like to see Mt. Pleasant expand its service of youth education in the church through young adult bible study and to begin a youth group. Alisa Hart is a cherished member of the Mt. Pleasant family and a child of God. May she continue to be blessed and to bless others throughout her journey.

Verse: Romans 1:11-12 NIV I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.
